‘Friends of Wehr’ and Stanek Windows give Wehr Nature Center a Facelift

Surrounded by 220 acres of nature preserve, Mallard Lake and the Root River, the Wehr Nature Center in Whitnall Park had seen better days. Rotting, inefficient wood windows and peeling paint detracted from the natural beauty all around. Stanek Windows of West Allis, Wisconsin, worked with the nonprofit group, Friends of Wehr, to bring energy-efficient and beautiful Stanek® brand windows to the center. Together, they helped the center’s director set up a program to reach out to the public and corporate sponsors to fund the improvements.
With just a picture window, the small office had no ventilation, so Stanek suggested replacing it with a sliding window. Now the office staff can hear the birds and enjoy the fresh air — they love it! A variety of other window styles were also installed, including picture windows and casement and awning windows.
The director loved the woodgrain option for the interior finish and chose medium oak for the vinyl windows to complement the rest of the wood trim. Now visitors are greeted by the warm look of wood in the meeting room and throughout the building. On the exterior, the beige really pops against the green siding.
Because every Stanek® window is made specifically for each project, the Milwaukee parks commissioner was able to customize the size, style and energy efficiency of each window depending on the needs in that particular room. Those customizations helped them get the most out of donations and sponsorship funds. As donations continue to come in, more windows will be replaced.
